Justpeace - Our small land

On this patch of land, we also do some gardening nowadays. This land was totally deserted and stripped off almost all plants and trees when we came here.

We (Joby and I) both are interested in involving with nature, plants and small animals. Recently, we have got a small kitten called Kitty, which Joby caught in the rain, and ever since she has made our home her home. White, very vigorous, very friendly, and Daniela is never tired of her.

Agriculture is what we involve in apart from our usual duties of the day. I try to pluck out fasting-growing weeds by hand or by using a hoe. Joby plants seeds or saplings bought from nursery, from friends, her home, etc. I help her sometimes by digging, cutting, spraying insecticides/fertilizers, etc., although she can herself do all these by herself if I am unavailable. Daniela too helps sometimes, disposing collected weeds or dry leaves, etc., into a basket and throw them for later burning with thrash.

We get fresh vegetables, namely, green chillis, lady's fingers (okra), French beans, and brinjals. Nowadays, brinjals are the main  vegetables received, around 3 to 6 per day and we are tired of eating them and been sharing with others. Some 5 months before, it was French beans.  We were getting nearly 1/4 kg or more almost every day. Newer ones French bean seeds have been planted and have started growing.

Occasionally, we also get bunches of bananas, yellow (pallayankodan) or green (Robusta), very refreshing. Sometimes we eat them altogether if less, but if they are big, then we need to sell them off to local shops to prevent wastage.

We have also planted a few seeds of corn last month (just to roast and eat if it grows!). Apart from that, we have also planted 2 coconut palms procured at Rs. 125/- each, one has spoiled, mainly from large insects. Insects and infestation are a common problem of the soil here apart from too much fasting-growing weeds, but the soil is rich.

Apart from that, we have some potted and unpotted flowers and ornamental plants (a few donated by mummy and Merlin). There are also 1 or 2 mango saplings, guava saplings, etc., planted.

We also dream of growing some cows, goats, pigs, turkey, guinea fowls, goose, ducks, hens, rabbits, etc., but limitation of space will not permit at present!
